PM inaugurates strategic Z-Morh tunnel in J&K, remains non-committal on timeline of Statehood restoration
1. PM Modi inaugurates ₹2,700 crore Z-Morh Tunnel in J&K
The 6.5-kilometer-long bi-directional Z-Morh Tunnel, located between Gagangir and Sonamarg in central Kashmir's Ganderbal district, was inaugurated by PM Modi on January 13, 2025. The project, costing over ₹2,700 crore, aims to make Sonamarg an all-weather tourist destination.
2. A Tribute to Workers' Sacrifices
PM Modi acknowledged the contributions of workers who endured harsh weather and even risked their lives to complete the tunnel. Referring to the October 20, 2024, militant attack that claimed seven workers' lives, he said, "The incident didn’t deter us. No worker returned without completing their duty."
3. Enhanced Connectivity to Kargil and Leh
The Z-Morh Tunnel, along with the upcoming Zojila Tunnel, will improve connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh. PM Modi emphasized that these projects will ensure easier access to hospitals, essential services, and tourism destinations even during adverse weather conditions.
4. Massive Investment in Infrastructure
Describing J&K as a region with world-class infrastructure, PM Modi highlighted several ongoing projects:
- ₹42,000 crore worth of connectivity initiatives, including the Katra-Delhi Expressway.
- Chenab Bridge and Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla railway link.
- Tourism-focused ropeways at Shankaracharya Temple, Shiv Khori, and Baltal-Amarnath Shrine.
"Tourists can now reach untouched destinations, making J&K the most connected region in India," he stated.
5. Vision for 'Viksit Bharat' and United India
PM Modi reiterated that a developed India ("Viksit Bharat") is only possible when every region thrives. He referred to J&K as the "crown of the nation" and emphasized removing obstacles to its growth. "‘Dili ki Doori’ is over now," he added, urging collective efforts to realize the dreams of the region's people.
6. Reserved on Statehood Timeline
While responding to J&K CM Omar Abdullah's demand for statehood restoration, PM Modi said, "Every promise has its time. When Modi commits, he fulfills." However, he did not provide a specific timeline for this process.
7. A New Era in Kashmir
PM Modi praised the peaceful developments in J&K, including international events like marathons, car racing, and winter sports. He noted, "After 40 years, people are enjoying late-night shopping and activities."
8. Omar Abdullah's Call for Statehood
In his speech, CM Omar Abdullah highlighted the need to fulfill the "third promise" of restoring statehood to J&K. He acknowledged PM Modi's role in conducting free and fair elections and rebuilding trust among the people.
9. End of Terrorism, Rise of Tourism
J&K L-G Manoj Sinha credited PM Modi's efforts for replacing terrorism with development. "J&K is rediscovering itself as a paradise," he said.
10. Faster Access to Delhi
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that with new road projects worth ₹50,000 crore, Srinagar will soon be just an eight-hour drive from Delhi. The Z-Morh Tunnel is a key step in this transformation.
